A 50-year Legacy of Changing Lives

In 1961, a small group of ABS staff and friends pledged to help deliver Bibles to a different country each month. 50 years and more than a million Bibles later, their impact is still being felt.

They didn't know they were making history, but God was calling them to act. It was 1961. Denying God's very existence was the latest philosophical fad. There was a battle being waged for the hearts and minds of millions.

A small group of key leaders at American Bible Society decided to push back against the growing influence of atheism around the world. They understood that the Bible was the one Book that could open blind eyes to eternal truth and impart "the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" 2 Timothy 2.15 (GNT). Each of the group pledged to give an extra gift a month from their paychecks to send a Bible to someone who needed it. Bible-A-Month began from the seeds of their efforts.

The "club" caught on. Soon some 35 American Bible Society staff and friends were contributing each month. That's when the Bible-A-Month Club went public. Within two years, Bible-A-Month had helped distribute more than 83,000 Bibles. Five decades later, Bible-A-Month Partners have helped distribute Bibles in 400 languages to 500,000,000 people in 100 countries worldwide.

A Bible Each Month – Countless Lives Changed!

Every $5 you contribute helps provide a Bible to someone in need around the world.

Through your monthly Bible-A-Month gifts, you help provide the Bible's message of hope and salvation to a world gripped by spiritual famine and need. Your faithfulness makes it possible for God's Word to reach orphaned children in West Africa . . . spiritually starved believers in the war-torn Middle East . . . remote villages high in the mountains of Peru . . . and the darkest corners of our own inner cities.

Wherever it reaches, God's Word changes lives. And as a Bible-A-Month Partner, every $5 you contribute will help send another Bible on its way. Remember, your ongoing partnership is critical because eternal destinies hang in the balance.

"If I had a Bible of my own, it would be just me and God. I would read it slowly, and savor it word for word," she says.

  • Responding To Vital Scripture Needs In Jamaica . . . "In Any And Every Form."
  • Expect celebrations this spring when churchgoers hear the Scriptures, specifically the Gospel of Luke, in Jamaican Patois for the first time. This is the language spoken by five million people in Jamaica and across the world. Despite being so widely used, Patois is often seen as an inferior language, making those who speak it feel ashamed. Reverend Courtney Stewart, General Secretary of the Bible Society of the West Indies, supervised the translation project. He says, "Patois has always been regarded as the language to communicate music and folklore, so this is of great significance. It means we will be able to communicate the Word of God at a deeper level in churches. And God's Word will reach people in a way that has previously not been the case."

"Bible-A-Month has meant a lot to me over the years and as long as I am able, I'm going to be a Partner."

— Flora Speed, Bible-A-Month Partner for 25 years

It was 25 years ago when Mrs. Flora Speed learned about Bible-A-Month. Her husband, James, was a minister, so naturally they supported mission work. However, the opportunity to Partner in the printing and distribution of Bibles really appealed to Flora. "I thought, ‘This is something we could contribute to and, hopefully, make a difference somewhere in the world,'" she says. So she sent her first gift and has been a Bible-A-Month Partner ever since.

"Every month I look forward to my Partner's Report to find out where Bibles are going and read the personal accounts of people who have been touched, and become believers, by getting their own Bibles," she says.

"Bible-A-Month is something my husband and I can do as part of God's mission." And Flora wants others to know they can too. "Whatever you can contribute makes a difference," she says. "You don't have to have a lot of money to help put Bibles into the hands of people who may never even see a Bible or let alone hear God's Word."

Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. James Speed, Jr. and all our Bible-A-Month Partners who faithfully share the blessing of the Bible.
